The Vice President, Environment (the VP) will be responsible for providing leadership, functional oversight, and support to environmental teams at all Company operations and projects. Additionally, the VP will mentor local teams to build capacity, increase management efficiency, and define strategies to manage environmental risk at the corporate and site levels. The VP will monitor and enhance existing environmental reporting systems, management systems, policies, guidelines, and strategies. This role will involve extensive travel.
Major Responsibilities
Leading Pan American Silver’s global and local environmental strategies.
Providing leadership and oversight necessary to ensure all Company operations have necessary operating permits in good order and they are complying with relevant laws, regulations, and specific significant permit conditions.
Ensuring no Significant Environmental Incidents (SEI’s) at operations through effective environmental management and auditing.
Collaborating effectively with corporate Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and local country/operations management to spearhead environmental initiatives and ensure site and corporate environmental objectives are met.
Leading the implementation of the corporate environmental auditing program and other initiatives in accordance with the Board Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) and Communities and Sustainable Development (CSD) Committee Mandates.
Leading the implementation of environmental protocols of Towards Sustainable Mining and Responsible Gold Mining Principles at operations.
Leading the regular update of Asset Retirement Obligation (ARO) estimate for financial reporting.
Coordinating all internal monthly and quarterly environmental reporting to senior management and the HSE and CSD committees.
Ensuring that environmental permitting for new projects and expansions is carried out according to schedule and best practice.
Managing and overseeing environmental budgets and establishing accurate and efficient reporting and management systems.
Developing and producing reports and materials for management, the Board of Directors, and external communications.
Providing environmental input to annual sustainability reporting.
Seeking opportunities for recognition of Pan American Silver’s environmental achievements and accurate communication of performance to ESG analysts and investor groups.
Implementing effective stakeholder engagement on environmental issues that can be used to drive materiality assessments for reporting and overall corporate strategy.
Leading mine closure strategy and planning, including management of mine closure and post-closure processes in conjunction with the Projects team.
Maintaining legacy properties and closed mines in good order.
Supporting business development and strategic planning for Company growth.
Qualifications
Minimum 15 years of senior leadership experience in Environment, including a minimum of 10 years in progressive management roles for large, internationally operating mining companies.
2 to 3 years of site-based experience gained through secondments or through extensive travel to operating sites providing oversight and direction from a corporate office.
Undergraduate degree in a technical or science-based discipline, such as environmental sciences, environmental engineering, or an equivalent degree.
Experience developing and implementing environmental strategies.
Extensive knowledge of environmental risk management and environmental reporting.
Experience presenting to C-suite level executives and to Boards of Directors and Board Committees on environmental matters.
Advanced proficiency in written and verbal English and Spanish.
Ability to establish credibility at the operational, executive, and Board levels as the subject matter expert in all matters related to environmental, community, and stakeholder engagement best practices.
Exposure to regulatory environments in multiple jurisdictions.
Advanced expertise in developing, executing, and auditing environmental management strategies and programs.
Technical expertise in regulatory compliance, water management, water treatment, tailing ponds planning, permitting, closure planning, and aftercare monitoring.
Advanced understanding of corporate social responsibility best practices gained through work experience and/or collaboration and interaction with colleagues and stakeholders.
Experience managing or overseeing proactive environmental programs that engage local stakeholders and enhance corporate image and reputation.
Proven ability to exhibit cultural awareness and sensitivity in a business environment.
Strong leadership, strategic thinking, people management, communication, and interpersonal skills, combined with strong business acumen.
A self-motivated senior leader with the ability to influence and motivate without authority.
Disciplined project development professional with strong program and project management skills for system implementation and improvement initiatives.
Preferred Attributes
Graduate degree.
Proficiency in verbal and written Portuguese.
Work experience in Latin America.
